The Artist - Statement of Purpose Workshop

$45.00

When: Tuesday, June 23rd

Where: Online

Time: 12 -1:00 pm

A great artist statement is built on the back of a clear purpose statement, the logic behind the spirit of your art.

A Statement of Purpose is one sentence stating why you are an artist, the intended impact you want to make for others and on the world. Whereas an Artist Statement focuses on the creative process and themes in a particular piece of art or a series. It states how you are making the impact.

Both statements are key ingredients to staying motivated and focused, and in preparing CVs and biographies, discussing your work, and exploring exhibition and residency opportunities.

“Catherine's passion for supporting artists in finding their statement of purpose was evident and created a super supportive environment. “ - Melissa Renwick, photographer

Participant Reviews

"After a few days of thinking about what we did in the workshop, I started to think more broadly, existentially, about my life. I feel like clarity of my purpose is amazing knowledge to keep reminding myself of, because we, artists, question ourselves far too often. I highly recommend this workshop.”

- Nika Belianina , Visual Storyteller | Director | Photographer

“Catherine dug deep into the words we used to construct our Statement of Purpose, and I am glad that she did because it really clarified things. She was very generous with her time as well. Any artist would greatly benefit from this workshop! And not just artists. I explained it to my son, and he got a lot out of it, too.”

It was more about slowing down and getting clearer on what’s actually underneath my practice…what it’s built on, without all the noise around it.

For me, it shifted things in a real way. My writing, studio practice, teaching, and curatorial work all started to feel less like separate lanes and more like they’re coming from the same source.

It just felt like one of those things that quietly opens up how you see your own work.”
