Realizing Your Purpose

Truth be told, it took me a while to understand what it means to realize your purpose.

Art is one way we realize our purpose, but what does that mean?

  1. To create something tangible (real) that comes from your unique and significant human foundation.

  2. To step back, look at what you have created and acknowledge (realize) your uniqueness and significance.

  3. To make the lives of your audience a bit better when they see (realize) something true about themselves that makes them unique and significant, when experiencing what you create.

As humans, our attention is constantly pulled away from why we do what we do, the unique, significant message we are communicating to our audience that comes from our core, the foundation of who we are that makes us human, and we get stuck in the weeds. We get stuck in what we are doing, our technique, logistics and external pressures.

We are also easily sidetracked by what others are doing, making us lose sight of ourselves, the unique and significant human in us that we are trying to realize and get better at being for ourselves and the well-being of others.

An Artist Statement of Purpose is one sentence you can use as a tool when creating becomes overwhelming, and uncertainty creeps in to remind us of why we are unique and significant.
