It’s Magic

Magic embodies two truths that sit side by side. The unbelievable and the obvious. The unbelievable to the one the trick is being done for, and the obvious to the trickster.

We call something magic when we don’t have a way to explain what has happened, and yet, to the trickster or magician, it is all a series of very logical, explainable, and well-choreographed steps, not unlike The Artist - Statement of Purpose Workshop I performed a few weeks ago.

During my last workshop for my friend Fausta Facciponte's Artist Professional Practice Class at Sheridan College, the magic happened when one of her students, Manumi, shared her personal statement of purpose, which she had created 15 min earlier, and a painting she had done months before.

I know this magic moment well because it is present in every workshop I perform when an artist sees the words in their statement of purpose, living in their art. The profound clarity of the impact they are making through thier work is often emotional and unbelievable.

Manumi’s statement of purpose is To Play So We Evolve. Her expanded statement goes something like this: I play through life, embracing childlike excitement so we evolve and transform through our experiences. Below is the piece she shared.

This magic trick never gets old.
